Vice Admiral

Name: Yaroslav Yuranovich Ivanko
Age: 67
Species: Human
Sex: Male

Height: 5'7”
Weight: 163lbs
Place of Birth: Chernihiv, Ukraine – Earth
Affliation: Federation

Rank: Vice Admiral
Primary Assignment: Starbase Archangel/Tlumach Yards – Sector CO/ Supervisor
Secondary Assignment : U.S.S. Tirpitz – Commanding Officer

Physical Overview:

Despite his age, Ivanko is in good condition physically, able to perform various strenuous activities for prolonged periods of time. Although not overweight, he isn't exactly thin either, more a mix of muscle and old-age fat. He is considered fit, however Yaroslar occasionally uses a walking stick as his right leg is prone to numbness and the odd spell of severe pain as a result of muscle and nerve injury from an explosion during the Dominion War.

The Admiral has a warm, friendly look to him, and while he can be just that on the rare occasion, it is somewhat deceiving. He is also about half way through becoming bald, tending to keep his hair at a couple of inches in length to try and make up for it, this also helps make him look taller than he actually is.

Personality Overview:

Yaroslav is a tough officer to say the least. On duty, he is often brutally blunt and tells things exactly how they are, he detests people that bring bad news and try to wrap it up in cotton wool, preferring it to be straight talk as it saves time and allows the messenger to leave with their dignity still intact. Ivanko is fiercely defensive over his heritage, as are most Ukrainians, and will often take offence at people who ask “Are you Russian?” or something along those lines. He is not afraid to do what he thinks is right, believing that there are three options to everything; the right thing, the smart thing and the wrong thing.

Yaroslav has become quite a secluded person since the death of his wife, almost becoming totally emotionless at one point. He prefers his own company, and that of a very closed circle of friends to any body else. The Admiral has a sharp tongue, which if you piss him off, you will feel its sting. Although not aggressive – he will always try diplomacy first -,Ivanko is never afraid to use force should the situation require it.

Ivanko will always get the job done, regardless of the cost – a tip he learned from his Klingon Commander during an exchange programme. Yaroslav has picked up a number of good traits from Klingons, in that he is honest, honourable and during the need for battle, will never back done. He is knowledgeable and reliable and can also motivate people effectively. Yaroslav is a skilled warrior with many Klingon bladed weapons and used to practise wrestling as a past time in his youth – he still has the fighting spirit.

However, on the flip side of things, Yaroslav can come across as patronising, and stuck up somewhat. He has never been a lover of socialising and does frown upon idle chatter amongst on duty officers believing that they will do better with full concentration, and avoiding distraction of others. He is a very serious person, despite his witicisms he prefers formality, especially on duty where he can be seen as humourless.

Hobbies and Interests:

Ivanko spends a lot of his free time mountaineering in the holodeck – alone – which is one of his favourite past times. Another of his hobbies is sailing, which again, he prefers to do alone as he finds the presence of others unnecessarily distracting. What little socialising that the Admiral does, normally involves a lot of alcohol and folk singing, which is on of the traditions that he has maintained through his Ukrainian heritage. Although Command and Operations are his speciality department, Yaroslav is a keen scientist of xenobiology and plants. He is also a collector of antiques, fine arts and weapons.

Languages:

English, Ukrainian, Russian, and Klingon.

NB: Ivanko sometimes uses several Ukrainian words in place of some English words such as 'tse' meaning 'this/that/the', 'tak' meaning 'yes', 'ne' meaning 'no' and 'dobre' meaning 'good/fine/of course/okay'. He also speaks with quite a heavy accent and occasionally struggles to pronounce some words, often a cause of frustration within him. Ukrainian is a much more melodic sounding language than Russian, this is also demonstrated in the accent, with it flowing much more and featuring less emphasis on stop consonants.
